What happens when you fall into a Reading Rut?
or readers block as i keep calling it.
In a few days my daughter turns 3 and my son turns 1. The party bags are organised and all the presents are purchased. But I can not hide the fact that I am exhausted to my core. I’ve not had a full night sleep since before my daughter was born (bar 2 nights from a babymoon getaway). Thankfully during most of this time I’ve managed to find relaxing with a book fills my cup and I somehow make it through the night.
But, since the end of Jan I’ve been staring at my book with no enthusiasm to pick it up. Despite really enjoying the story. I went nearly two weeks without reading anything other than articles and 4 weeks later I’m still on the same book. I have however leaned into audiobooks more and have read a handful, including some great suggestions from some of my subscribers (many many thanks)
This is not a how to guide of how to get through a reading rut, just a post acknowledging that it happens. When we spend time talking about and documenting books we’ve read and how we feel about them it’s a strange feeling not to have a bookish update with lots and lots of books. I’m trying to avoid any bookish chatter where I add 10-20 new books on my mental tbr and instead just slowly get back into my reading rhythm again.
Audiobooks has been my saviour for my long walks, although I would enjoy a podcast however since the highlow and literary friction have since finished I’ve not found anything as appealing.
I have also recently discovered the library and I know I know I keep banging on about it but there is just so much amazing stuff at our fingertips. I’ve managed to sample books without committing and putting on my wishlist. I’ve also put holds on books, the having to wait for them builds the excitement so much more than having constant access at the end of our finger tips at all times!
Hopefully by next month I will have finished my current read (wild houses) as well as my chosen February book (white teeth). If not I will have an audiobook round up to catch you up with!
