Summer Reading List
As I am writing this thunder is calling, rain is hammering on and I am thinking to myself what happened to summer? This year in the UK it has been a mild and intermittent, although I’m aware that Europe has reached all time high heatwaves. Global warming is real! I envisioned this summer to be like last with picnics and beach strolls it has been more coffee stops and trips to the swings between downpours.
I am determined not to give up on the hope of a prolonged sunny spell, where I can read a book on the grass and move because I’m too hot, not because it is threatening to rain. Personally I enjoy reading seasonally, and this year is no different. Over the last few weeks I’ve really felt the urge to push myself on new topics, new authors and really try to explore newness! I am a sucker for a popular read (hello Yellowface, which goes without saying that I loved) but I also want to read some meatier books, whether that is subject or page count.
I have found myself enjoying a couple of rereads too, this is something I never thought of doing. If I can only manage 60 books a year then previously I wanted them all to be new, to be exciting. But I have found the importance of slowing down and indulging in favourites, I love to watch the same film almost on repeat that why can it not be the same with books?
Usually I find my self with an armful of books and my kindle full to the brim with everything that I’m excited to read. Last summer I was very much in the mist of postpartum and finding the time and mental energy to read was almost non existent, I did however restart the Harry Potter series, which I am slowly plodding through along side my other reads. I thought this year would be a similar pace. Being back at work, combined with “life” I thought I would struggle to get through a book or two but, in some kind of miracle I’ve managed to not only pick up a handful of books and finish them I’ve managed to explore new authors and genres I wouldn’t usually gravitate towards.
It has made me think about what is the perfect summer book for me, below I’ve compiled what my summer reads are going to be, some are rereads, which is something I never used to do.
I love to read seasonally, so if I buy a book that is set in a hot climate or in summer then I tend to save it for the warmer months. This is what I am hoping to read over the rest of the summer. I’m sure to add in a few more!
The Other Eden by Paul Harding
