Whilst I’ve been seeing and LOVING gingham in all its guises Fashion Soup has done a great (post linked below) I can’t help but notice the rise of the Polka Dot. I’ve got a few gingham pieces in my wardrobe but I always feel that they can look pyjamary. My polka dot pieces however have been around longer, and for me, feel more chic whilst still being able to inject some fun into my outfit.
Again, the Polka Dot is not a new print but I think that’s what makes it so appealing. Is the fact has longevity. What I love about the print is the seasonlessness of it. SEASONLESS is one of my go to words for shopping and dressing right now (new post in the pipeline). I find myself gravitating and dressing in this way more and more. Today it was stormy and cold, but next week the weather is hopefully picking up. Unlike a floral the polka dot seems to just work whatever the situation.
When I think of a timeless spot I think of the classic Pretty Woman, and since then I’ve noticed the iconic spot everywhere.
Catwalk
I was starting to catch up on some of the latest Resort 2026 show and loved seeing the spot become more and more prevalent. We’ve seen sheer on the catwalk for a while so seeing spots on top of that feels like an easy transition. That, alongside the 3d spot which seems entirely impractical and kitsch has caught my eye!
It’s not surprising that the spot is being embraced by both designer and highstreet. It has a broad appeal and is extremely versatile. With the current spending climate designers are no doubt falling into a safe bubble (hello minimalism and neutrals) But the Polks dot fights against that whilst still feeling fresh and timeless.
I love it being worn with the pop colour of the season here at Prabal Gurung it is worn with blue, but this can so easily be worn with any bold colour of choice. I also love the kitsch heart spot, another way of leaning into a classic and timeless print in a more fun way.
Inspiration
This collection of inspiration feels almost timeless, whilst still being full of personality. I really hate the words “wardrobe staple” and “chic” when it just means neutral and boring. These all taken from Pinterest, worn over almost 10 years apart yet still feel interesting and modern. It really emphasises how if you choose the right spot garment (for you) then you can rewear as often as you like to almost any occasion.
The almost “non print” works as a great layering tool when you want to add detail but not want to derive from a colour pop, here the bold pops of yellow add personality whilst the print gives the outfit another dimension.
A classic spot on top of a trend colour like butter yellow feels like an easy and comfortable way to introduce seasonal colours. I love seeing it layered on top of an easy white tee keeping to a playful and nostalgic feel.
Could the spot be the print to replace the leopard print?
So many interesting ways to wear, and just by changing what you pair it with season on season can make it feel fresh. I love the fun printed tees that add personality. OR the bold rugby shirt looks so modern and chic.
It’s likely that you have elements in your wardrobe already and you can look at all the inspiration and have lots of new ways to wear spots.
If you don’t and you’re still not sure on how to incorporate then I have lots of inspiration that is on the high street currently. I always have the same advice for a trend that is new to you
Look at what you wear the most in your wardrobe, is it a favourite shirt or wide leg trouser etc. Either choose a polka dot item that works with it or in the same guise.
For example if you love you satin skirt then simply look for a spotty skirt. IF you have a skirt that you barely wear then avoid adding additional one to your wardrobe and go for something more you.
Vinted, depop, eBay or any second hand shop is a great place to find a wide range of spotty items at really reasonable price points. This can be a great way to try new shapes/colours/prints at a more accessible price point.
Sometimes starting small can be a fun way to elevate an outfit that already feels very you. Here I would say focus on the accessories!
Here are my favourite pieces I’ve seen online:
I love the classic Nobody’s child spot, easy and chic. I can imagine wearing with a bomber and silver loafers to give an added edge.
Anthropologie is a great place to shop a spot. They had a range of silhouettes, fabrics and price points. The jumpsuit I felt was a modern take on the pretty woman classic. The wide leg creates gorgeous silhouette. I picture layering with a sheer long sleeve top in a cooler climate.
Something totally different is The Lazy Oaf red spot dress, it brings the drama. Wear with a wide collar (think damson madder) shirt underneath.
I am obsessed with the gradient spot linen dress, it looks so classy and comes with a punchy price tag (£538). Love the styling with the yellow shoes.
The head to toe spot is a commitment, but again something that feels easy. A co-ord can feel cooler than a dress. A monochrome look can be a great base to add a flash of colour.
The bomber jacket made me gasp, if you had told me I’d add a polka dot bomber to my Wishlist that didn’t give mr tumble vibes, I’m not sure I’d believe you I also love the long sleeve tee which feels like a wardrobe staple. Both &OthersStories
A polka dot top (Arket & Caroline Hererra) this is the “nice top and jeans” outfit. I’ve got a couple of spotty silk shirts and they effortless fit the bill.
As accessories go, I would personally avoid a spot silk scarf, it feels a bit on the nose too retro. I do love the Ganni micro bag, or even just a fun spot phone case! These sheer spot socks, despite making your feet incredibly sweaty would look amazing in loafers, boat shoes or trainers.
