I know it sounds nerdy but every year I think about my reading goal. I don’t tend to set New Years resolutions other than read more, watch tv/be on my phone less. Over the last few years though it has become less about how many books I want to read but how I want to grow as a reader or find enjoyment from reading. I’ve been trying to read much more mindfully rather than to consume as much as possible. Of course I still love an easy going book, but I do find myself getting frustrated if I’ve not read something that has challenged, pushed or inspired me.
2023 I made a conscious effort to read more male authors and explored reading from different long/short lists. Here I read both the Bee sting and This Other Eden two of my favourite books of the year.
I also dabbled in viral books, in the hopes of finding a series to enjoy in replacement of Harry Potter. It was extremely unsuccessful and I will be looking at what other books there are that can fill that void. Recommendations encouraged!
On first thought I’m not looking to increase the amount I read. 60-65 books is a comfortable amount for me and this year I’m due a baby in the spring, so I don’t think I will be reading as much as that. I’d be happy if I even reached 30 personally.
I want to keep reading from reading lists that I’m not super familiar with. The booker prize was a great place to start so I’m going to read from here. I also think I’d like to read more translated fiction.
I also want to read my bookshelf, I’ve got a handful of thrifted and gifted books as well as a small backlog of kindle books. So I am officially on a buying book ban until I’ve made my way through these.
I’ve also got small but specific goals, I want to read my first Steven King novel as well as finishing the Harry Potter series (3 left to go)!
